One slap cost India's budding cricketer, Mr Harbhajan Singh alias Phaji (meaning respected elder brother in Punjabi), crores of rupees. He had allegedly slapped his colleague, Mr S. Sreesanth, after Mohali vs Mumbai match last Friday, April 25, 2008.
Whatever the provocation for this drastic action, his colleagues say he does not take kindly to any provocation.
Mr Singh was “auctioned” for about Rs 3.4 crores. (One crore is equal to Rs 10,000,000.) This is a new trend in Indian cricket. As the popularity of the game draws millions of fans to playgrounds, the players started demanding more remuneration for their efforts. The cricket authorities decided to have sponsors who would “buy” the players in an auction and make their teams.
Mr Singh is not only losing the astronomical cash,which generally is tax free, as the Indian Government would rather have more sportsmen than lazy lousy citizens, he has also been barred from playing in this year's remaining Indian Premier League matches. This is a great insult and financial loss to any player.
There is also a question mark if he will get paid for the matches he has already played because he “brought the game and team into disrepute”, as per rules.
